# AI Citation Tracking Alternatives: How to Choose in 2026

> Looking for an alternative to your AI mention and citation tracker? Use this six-point test: URL-level data, engine coverage, source gaps, freshness, pricing and next steps.

*By Bodrik Bakker · Published 2026-11-04 · Updated 2026-11-04 · Original article: https://trackbase.ai/blog/ai-citation-tracking-alternatives-how-to-choose-in-2026*

Look for an alternative to your AI mention and citation tracker on six things: URL-level citation data, engine coverage on the plan you would actually buy, a competitor source-gap view, data freshness, transparent pricing, and what the tool helps you do after it reports. A cheaper or broader tool only counts as an alternative if it holds up on those six. The rest of this guide shows how to test each one in a single afternoon.

## Why teams look for an alternative

Most switches start with one of three problems: the price jumps when you add engines or prompts, the tool reports mentions but not the exact pages being cited, or it shows a score without telling anyone what to fix. Those are different problems and they point to different replacements.

It also helps to separate two ideas that vendors often blur. A mention is your brand name appearing in the text of an AI answer. A citation is the answer crediting a specific URL as a source. They move independently, which is why a tool that only counts one of them gives a partial picture. We explain the difference in [mentions vs citations](https://trackbase.ai/blog/mentions-vs-citations-why-both-matter-for-your-ai-visibility).

## The six-point evaluation

| # | Criterion | What to ask the vendor | Red flag |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | URL-level citations | Can I see the exact cited page per [prompt](https://trackbase.ai/glossary/prompt) and per model? | Domain-level only |
| 2 | Engine coverage on your plan | Which models are included at the price I would pay? | "10 engines" that only unlock on the top tier |
| 3 | Source-gap view | Which cited pages name competitors but not me? | No competitor context |
| 4 | Freshness | How often are prompts re-run? | Weekly or unclear refresh |
| 5 | Pricing transparency | Is the price public, and what is capped (prompts, seats, domains)? | "Contact sales" for entry tier |
| 6 | Next steps | Does it produce prioritized actions or just charts? | Dashboard with no recommendations |

Public comparison articles from other vendors use very similar checklists. Similarweb's CITED checklist stresses coverage, prompt-data integrity, traffic attribution, evidence granularity and brand detection in [cited sources](https://trackbase.ai/glossary/cited-sources). DeepSmith and Orchly both put URL-level visibility and citation gap-finding first. Treat those pages with care: each ranks its own product first, so use them for the criteria, not the verdict.

## What the market data says about why URL-level matters

Citation sets are unstable and differ by engine. Similarweb reports, from roughly 600,000 [AI citation](https://trackbase.ai/glossary/ai-citation) events, only about 11% domain overlap between the sources ChatGPT and Perplexity cite, and about half of cited domains changing month to month ([Similarweb](https://aisearch.similarweb.com/blog/best-ai-citation-analysis-tools/)). Promptwatch reports social platforms at 0.46% of ChatGPT citations but 12.2% of Google AI Overview citations in the week of 28 September to 4 October 2026, as summarised by [Orchly](https://orchly.ai/blog/best-ai-citation-tracking-tools/). These are vendor-published figures, so read them as indicative.

The practical conclusion does not depend on the exact numbers: if sources change by engine and by month, a quarterly domain report is too slow and too coarse. You need daily, per-model, per-URL data.

## How the typical options differ

Rather than rank tools, here is how the main categories behave. Prices are what each vendor lists in the comparison pages above at the time of writing; confirm them on the vendors' own sites.

- **Dedicated** [**AI visibility**](https://trackbase.ai/glossary/ai-visibility) **platforms** (for example Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Profound): purpose-built tracking. Entry prices listed in third-party comparisons range from about $29 to $99 per month, with enterprise tiers custom-priced. Entry tiers often cap prompts or engines.

- **SEO suite add-ons** (Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit, SE Ranking): convenient if you already pay for the suite. Listed prices run from roughly $99 to $199 per month per domain or index, and engine coverage may be split across add-ons. See [Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz vs a dedicated platform](https://trackbase.ai/blog/ahrefs-semrush-moz-vs-dedicated-ai-visibility-platform).

- **Content-led tools** (for example DeepSmith, AirOps): they link citation gaps to content production. Useful if writing is your bottleneck, less so if you mainly need monitoring.

- **Enterprise suites**: broad, with traffic attribution and BrightEdge-style SEO integration, priced accordingly.

If your trigger is specifically Profound pricing, start with [9 Profound alternatives compared](https://trackbase.ai/blog/best-profound-alternatives).

## Where Trackbase fits

Trackbase is a Dutch, EU-hosted, GDPR-compliant platform that re-runs your prompts every 24 hours across up to 11 AI models: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overview, [Google AI Mode](https://trackbase.ai/glossary/google-ai-mode), Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, Copilot, LLaMA and Mistral. It reports Visibility Score, Share of Voice, sentiment, citations and a cited-sources view, and turns the last 30 days into a [prioritized action list](https://trackbase.ai/features/actions) with each item scored for impact from 1 to 10.

On the six criteria: citations are visible per source, daily refresh is standard, and actions are built in. Pricing is public on the [pricing page](https://trackbase.ai/pricing): Essential is €49 per month (10 prompts, 3 models, 3 competitors) and Professional is €199 per month (20 prompts, all 11 models, 10 competitors, Share of Voice and cited sources), both with a 14-day free trial, excluding VAT. Be honest about limits: the entry plan covers three models, and the cited-sources view is on Professional. If you need many brands in one workspace, the Enterprise / Agency plan is custom.

## A one-afternoon test before you switch

1. Pick 10 prompts that matter, including 3 in Dutch if you sell in the Netherlands.

2. Run them in two or three candidate tools, using the free trial or free checker.

3. For each, check whether you can name the exact URLs cited for your top 3 prompts.

4. Find one source that cites a competitor but not you, and see whether the tool surfaces it unprompted.

5. Compare the price of the plan that actually includes those engines, not the headline price.

You can start the baseline with the [free AI visibility checker](https://trackbase.ai/free-ai-visibility-checker), and once citations are visible, [how to get cited by AI](https://trackbase.ai/blog/how-to-get-cited-by-ai-earning-mentions-on-the-sources-models-trust) covers what to do with the gaps. If you work in Claude, the [Trackbase MCP server](https://trackbase.ai/features/mcp) gives read-only access to the same data.

## FAQ

### What is an AI citation tracking tool?

It records which pages and domains AI engines cite when they answer prompts in your category, and which of those mention you or your competitors. Better tools show the exact URL per prompt and per model, not just the domain.

### Is a cheaper tool a real alternative?

Only if it keeps the data you rely on. Check the prompt cap, the engines included at that price and the refresh rate. A low entry price with 15 prompts and four engines solves a different problem than a broader plan.

### How long does it take to switch?

The data side is quick: re-create your prompts and competitors and a new baseline starts building from the first daily run. Historical comparisons do not carry over, so export what you need before you cancel.
